OCT ARRIVES IN MILTON KEYNES

Optical Coherence Tomography is the latest instrument on the block! Many ophthalmologists tell us that it has advanced the investigation of eye complaints forward by a decade.

I have invested a great deal of time in researching the technology and the need for such an instrument in my practice. The over-riding thought was is it good for my patients and does it work. The unequivocal answer is YES!

I purchased the Optovue instrument in January 2009. Iam the first and only optician with this technology in the wider MK area. There are only a thousand Optovues in the world so it is a rare diagnostic tool.

What does it do and how does it work? The analogy is to think of a piece of plywood that has been saturated by water. Looking down on the wood it appears quite normal but look at it edge on and you can see the layers bulging and wavy. So it is with OCT. The optometrist looks in the eye or takes a retinal image – this is looking at the flat back of the eye. Maybe it looks normal.

The OCT magic and huge computing power takes millions of measurements and allows me to look at the cellular layers at right angles to the flat back surface of the eye. I can now see eye defects that have little or no symptoms that can be treated at an early stage rather than waiting for sight defects. Don’t worry it is painless and is no more than shining a light in the eye.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. If you have an eye complaint or are concerned then please book an appointment to see me – I will take time and care to explain all my examinations fully to you.

Regards

Claire
