CLAIRE RANGER HAS CONTINUED HER STUDIES THROUGHOUT HER PROFESSIONAL CAREER AND IS NOW AMONG THE MOST HIGHLY QUALIFIED OPTICIANS IN THE UK
Where award winning eyecare and quality, combine.
Establishing Claire’s practice in the forefront of optical care and to make H&D the ‘one-stop-shop’ for anything ocular, are our over-riding ambitions.
ADVANCED BEHAVIOURAL OPTOMETRY COULD HELP YOUR CHILD’S DYSLEXIA AND OTHER CONDITIONS
Claire and Emma have both undertaken extensive post-graduate training to aid patients, both young and old, with problems such as dyslexia, visual stress and general eye fatigue. This advanced adjunct to ophthalmic optometry is known as Behavioural Optometry.
Vision and the motor visual system are our primary source for gathering information with 87% of learning occurring through the eyes. Even subtle issues with the visual system can have a major impact on our efficiency and performance, even more so for children when they progress into adulthood.
Children are usually born with the necessary ‘hardware’ (eyes, nerves, muscles and brain) to allow the development of normal sensory skills, but it takes a busy childhood of play, exploration and experience to develop and train the “software” (brain development and awareness) that controls what we take in from the world. If this ‘software’ is not established properly, it can result in problems with the visual system and therefore learning. If undetected these problems can continue into adulthood.
At Hammond and Dummer, we will explore these processes and use a range of treatments to help patients learn and function more efficiently. This can be applicable to any age group‚ not just to children, and can also be of direct benefit to those following accidents and with possible traumatic brain injury.
The initial assessment takes about 2 hours and, if required, home exercises may be given. Follow up visual training appointments are usually scheduled every 2 weeks with a further reassessment after 6 sessions. Treatment can take between 6 to 18 months for the full benefit to be felt.
TEAR CLINIC / DRY EYE ASSESSMENT
Dry, itchy eyes? Used lots of drops but they didn’t work? Claire has the answer at Hammond and Dummer.
In our Tear Clinic we thoroughly asses your eyelids, tear production and tear quality. We measure your tear osmolarity, tear break-up time, tear prism height, we assess the lipid component, the aqueous component, we look at your Meibomian glands, the meibum that is secreted, and the general health of the front of your eyes.
All this takes an hour and by the end of it we can elucidate why your eyes are dry and irritable. We can then tailor proper treatment to help you produce better tears, and treat your symptoms, meaning that you will have much more comfortable eyes.
We have a large range of treatments available and we can give you the advice and care you require. This is much better than just giving you a bottle of eye drops to see if they help and if they don’t come back in a fortnight!

CHROMAGEN COLOUR ANALYSIS
See the colours, read the words.
Do you, or any one you know, have dyslexia or colour vision problems?
The ChromaGen™ system allows us to examine eyes individually and prescribe coloured filters that are bespoke to you.
These filters can be worn as spectacles or contact lenses. Originally designed to help people with colour deficiencies differentiate between colours more effectively, they are now also advocated to help people with reading disorders or ASD.
These filters help re synchronise the information pathways to the brain to improve accuracy of reading, writing and comprehension.
